Modrobotics STEM toy

Cubelets by Modrobotics are innovative robot blocks that can be combined to create thousands of thought-provoking robots. Each block serves a unique function, such as sensing, actuating, or processing logic, allowing users to explore endless creative possibilities. By snapping these magnetic blocks together, children as young as four can construct simple robots while intuitively learning the fundamentals of electronics, programming, and robotics.

This hands-on, modular approach encourages curiosity, problem-solving, and STEM skill development in a fun and engaging way. Cubelets are designed to be accessible to beginners while also offering challenges for more advanced users, making them a versatile tool for both play and education. Teachers and parents can use Cubelets to introduce complex concepts in a simplified manner, fostering a love for technology and innovation from an early age.

Awards won by Cubelets:
Popsci Award
Teacher’s Choice Award

  • Creative learning: Snap-together blocks teach kids as young as four the basics of electronics, programming, and robotics.

  • STEM skill development: Encourages curiosity, problem-solving, and innovation through hands-on play.

  • Versatile and engaging: Accessible for beginners while offering challenges for advanced users, making it ideal for both play and education.

Role FPI

FPI is the manufacturer of Cubelets and was responsible for scaling them to mass production. Starting from the second prototype, FPI collaborated closely with the electronic engineers at Modrobotics. The primary engineering challenges faced by FPI included:

1. Ensuring electrical and data connections on all sides of each cube.
2. Designing within a compact 25 x 25 x 25 mm internal space.
3. Minimizing the number of injection molds by standardizing the internal structure, except for one face.

It’s great to see Cubelets on the table. We’ve made ~400,000 Cubelets so far; that’s about 16km worth – if you were to connect them in a giant line. Without Boukje and the team, they’d just be another idea.

Supply chain

FPI is responsible for the manufacturing and supply chain of the casing parts including connectors.

Overmolding

The magnets of the connectors are secured by overmolding technique.
